2010 Ice Storm

In the early part of the week of 17 January, heavy fog and temperatures just at the freezing mark coated every tree in Lake City with an incredible layer of hoarfroast, creating a beautiful flocked landscape fit for a Hallmark card. These photos of the bandstand in Lake City’s town square were taken by Lynn Dobson on Tuesday 19 January, first a shot at dusk, then a view at night.

One day later, however, precipitation increased as the temperature dropped, the beautiful frost soaked up all the moisture, and layer upon layer of ice formed on every exposed surface.

These two images of the square were taken on Wednesday 20 January, the following day. The bandstand is a little farther to the right, but otherwise the vantage point is the same.

Every tree in town has suffered some damage, from loss of limbs to collapse of the entire tree. In the photo above you can see that there’s an inch of ice built up on twigs only one-quarter of an inch in diameter.
