This weekend, Philadelphians had an opportunity to hear a uniquely local work for organ and orchestra. Samuel Barber composed his Toccata festiva in 1960 for the inauguration of the new organ in the Academy of Music; fittingly, it was performed at the dedication of our Op. 76 in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. This weekend, the Philadelphia Orchestra revisits it, under the direction of Marin Alsop, with Ken Cowan as organist.
